TJIC launches the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Video Games and Learning

Seventy-nine students and educators from various universities in Metro Manila and American Corners in the Philippines participated the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) kick off meeting about Video Games and Learning on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. The Thomas Jefferson Information Center (TJIC) Team taught the ways to utilize the online course platform and gave a brief background on the impact of gaming culture in school’s curriculum and instruction. In addition, Professor Ruth Alido of Philippine Normal University, a Fulbright alumnus, shared her MOOC experiences in the United States to the participants. The kick off ceremony was a great success in introducing students to open education and distance learning opportunities in the United States.

Renewal of partnership with the American Corner at Silliman University

Gianina Angela Celine Cabanilla, Thomas Jefferson Information Center visited American Corner Dumaguete to give an information literacy presentation to undergraduate students, librarians and professors at Silliman University.  The visit also gave way to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. Embassy and the Silliman University.

Renewal of partnership with the American Corner at Xavier University

Princess Grace Wooden, Thomas Jefferson Information Center Deputy Director visited American Corner Cagayan De Oro on September 11 and 12 and conduct a round table discussion with the American Corner Staff and American Corner Support Group. The visit also gave way to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. Embassy and the Xavier University.

Sixteen university professors, school teachers, guidance counselors and librarians from Saint Mary’s University at Nueva Vizcaya visited Embassy Manila’s Thomas Jefferson Information Center to learn more about how to use eLibraryUSA online databases. Thomas Jefferson Information Center celebrates International Literacy Day

Graduate students from University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies celebrate International Literacy Day at Thomas Jefferson Information Center.  During their visit, students discussed a library as a social institution, selection vs. censorship of library materials, Library Bill of Rights and the importance of respecting Intellectual Property Rights.

American Spaces Philippines Celebrate March on Washington 50th Anniversary

Thomas Jefferson Information Center Donates Books to Help Improve Literacy

The Muntinlupa City Public Library and the University of the Philippines Library received books and magazines about the United States from the Thomas Jefferson Information Center on August 29 and 30.  TJIC’s donation emphasized that a positive and practical change to closing the gap between library collections and young people starts with literacy.
